Hello

When you or a loved one is going through a mental health crisis, it can be frightening. You may not know what to do.

Peers can play many roles in support for people living with psychiatric disorders and/or in addiction recovery. They can facilitate education and support groups, work as a bridge linking people to services as they transition from hospitals or jails into the community and one-on-one as role models, mentors, coaches and advocates. Peers also help people develop psychiatric advance directions and create Wellness Recovery Action Plans.

What is Peer Support?

The concept of “peer support” in mental health originated in the self-help movement, which began in the 1970s. People who had experienced psychiatric hospitalization came together to support each other and work toward healing. They understood that symptom management was not enough for recovery and that individuals could live meaningful lives in their communities.
