What is Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)?

Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is a type of cognitive-behavioral therapy that helps individuals regulate their emotions and improve their interpersonal relationships. It was developed in the late 1980s by psychologist Marsha Linehan to treat individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD), but has since been found to be effective in treating a wide range of mental health issues.

How does DBT work?

DBT combines individual therapy sessions with group skills training to help individuals learn skills to manage their emotions, tolerate distress, and communicate effectively in relationships. The therapy focuses on four key areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. By learning these skills, individuals can better handle life's challenges and improve their overall quality of life.

Who can benefit from DBT?

DBT has been found to be effective in treating many mental health conditions, including BPD, depression, anxiety disorders, eating disorders, and substance use disorders. It can also be helpful for individuals who struggle with self-harm, suicidal thoughts, and impulsive behavior. DBT is typically conducted in a structured and intensive format, making it a good fit for individuals who need more support and guidance in their treatment.

What are the benefits of DBT?

DBT has been shown to be highly effective in reducing symptoms of mental health issues and improving overall quality of life. It can help individuals develop greater emotional regulation, improved communication skills, and stronger relationships with others. DBT has also been found to be effective in reducing self-harm and suicidal behavior, making it a potentially life-saving treatment for those who struggle with these issues.

DBT Four Core Skills

1

Become aware of your thoughts, emotions, and actions. Observe yourself without judgment.

2

Manage your emotions. Change unproductive emotions to productive ones. Generate positive emotions within yourself and others.

3

It is possible to overcome difficult situations and pain by learning to cope with them. By doing so, you can become confident and resilient.

4

You have the ability to ask for what you want. You have the right to say no, even if others disagree. Conflicts can be managed in healthy ways, and relationships can be built when we respect one another's differences.
